How to List
  1. Subscribe to CleanGredients®. Subscriptions are renewable on an annual basis. Subscription fees are based on the type and size of your organization.
  2. Enter ingredient information into the database. Aquatic toxicity and biodegradability data are verified and entered by a qualified third–party reviewer. Currently, NSF International is the only qualified third–party reviewer.
  3. Submit your ingredient/s to NSF International for review. Contact Teresa McGrath (phone: 651-493-4247, fax: 734-827-3871). Please submit:
    1. Completed Ingredient Information Request Forms with full information on the formulation of your product – i.e., all CAS numbers for chemicals in your surfactant product (anything intentionally added or present at >0.1%).
    2. Any internal test data you wish to submit in support of values for acute aquatic toxicity and biodegradability.
  4. NSF will provide a Contract for Services Agreement, which outlines the terms of the work agreement, a time estimate, and a quote for the cost of the review.
  5. NSF will review the public, scientific literature and databases and use structure–activity relationship (SAR) models to validate the values for aquatic toxicity and biodegradability. NSF will provide a Summary Report, which confirms the biodegradation and aquatic toxicity values. This report will also include a recommendation, if appropriate, for the ingredient to be listed in CleanGredients® and to meet the DfE Screen criteria or a statement of data insufficiencies.
  6. NSF will enter the validated information for aquatic toxicity and biodegradability into CleanGredients® for your surfactants.
  7. You approve the final entries and make them visible to viewers.

Contact NSF for a cost estimate. Quantity discounts or previously reviewed ingredient discounts apply. For more information see NSF's Quick Start Package.
