Process and Organizational Model

The development of CleanGredients® is a multi-stakeholder process currently engaging approximately 600 participants. The process is managed by Topher Buck of GreenBlue. Interested participants serve on the Steering Committee, one or more of the Technical Advisory Committees (TACs), or as Project Associates. CleanGredients® Project Associates are individuals from industry, government, non-profit organizations, industry associations, consulting, and more who have expressed interest in the project, receive monthly project updates, and serve as the peer review community for input on the project and for beta testing of new application modules. Members of the Steering Committee were selected to represent a balance of formulators, suppliers, government and environmental interests. The Steering Committee meets monthly. Technical Advisory Committees are created by open invitation to all Project Associates with an emphasis on technical expertise and meet at a minimum of every three weeks. Subcommittees may be created to focus on specific development needs and meet in addition to the regular full TAC meetings. New TACs are created as needed to provide the expertise and input required for the development of additional CleanGredients® modules for new ingredient classes.

GreenBlue has designed and manages the CleanGredients® development process to maximize stakeholder input into the design of CleanGredients® using a consensus-based process. Where consensus is not possible, democratic process (majority through voting) with the option to publish minority opinions is followed. The Technical Advisory Committees make recommendations which are approved by the Steering Committee. Figure 1 illustrates how the project stakeholders are grouped and interact to support the design and development of CleanGredients®.
